The south shoulder is one of the more difficult faces of Russell peak, because even though there are more options, there are also a lot more dangers. There are tight couliors, cliffs, and lots of exposure if the snow is not right. Depending upon the conditions, these lines can be completely filled in, or very exposed. They heat up pretty quick due to the sun in the spring, so you want to be careful up there. If you want to ski the south shoulder and you need an escape route, look south to Oatmeal Bowl for other options.[more]
A lot of good stuff out here
How to Get There
take 285 S to US HWY 50, then Go West to Gunnison. Go North towards Crested Butte
Winter Camping is not really an option, but there are a couple of places that you might be able to find. In the Spring and Late fall you will be able to camp just north of town.
Poke around, you will find something
A lot of the access up here is made easier by snow mobiles, but once you are up there, then you can be skiing freely.
